7/5/2023 0 Comments Dreamland by Sarah Dessen![]() It’s a very quick and short book that packs a lot in. It wasn’t this immediate, I’m happy again!, it was a process that took months and I loved that it showed that side of therapy. The aftermath felt more realistic as well. ![]() I anxiously listened waiting until she was broken free of her bonds to him and had a chance to grieve. ![]() While a very hard hitting novel, it also approached hope and recovery in the last few chapters. It was unfathomable and I was upset on so many levels for her. I felt in physical pain myself because of how Rogerson was treating Caitlin. I was practically in tears listening to this (audio book was good!) because of how much it hurt me listening to what was happening to Caitlin. ![]() ![]() Initially, I felt like this book was all about Caitlin’s sister, Cassandra, than it was about Caitlin. It’s the most mature and serious one I’ve ever read of hers. Second reason I picked up this book? I have the same name as the MC and have NEVERRRRR gotten to read a book with that fun fact.Īnd if you’re not one for reading synopsis (I’m not, I usually read it initially then by the time I get to read the book I’ve forgotten it and don’t look at it), let me say, this is not a fluffy Dessen novel. First reason I picked up this book? Someone commented on one of my Instagram photos telling me about it. ![]()

7/5/2023 0 Comments The homeric hymn to apollo![]() ![]() ![]() Born with the dawning, at mid-day he played on the lyre, and in the evening he stole the cattle of far-shooting Apollo on the fourth day of the month for on that day queenly Maia bare him. For then she bare a son, of many shifts, blandly cunning, a robber, a cattle driver, a bringer of dreams, a watcher by night, a thief at the gates, one who was soon to show forth wonderful deeds among the deathless gods. And when the purpose of great Zeus was fixed in heaven, she was delivered and a notable thing was come to pass. ![]() There the son of Cronos used to lie with the rich-tressed nymph, unseen by deathless gods and mortal men, at dead of night while sweet sleep should hold white-armed Hera fast. § 1 Muse, sing of Hermes, the son of Zeus and Maia, lord of Cyllene and Arcadia rich in flocks, the luck-bringing messenger of the immortals whom Maia bare, the rich-tressed nymph, when she was joined in love with Zeus, - a shy goddess, for she avoided the company of the blessed gods, and lived within a deep, shady cave. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Robin Stevens is a very good writer because her stories are so awesome that you feel like you are right there in the book. It’s really interesting watching how the girls’ friendship changes over the course of the series and how Hazel gets bolder. A Spoonful of Murder is set in Hong Kong, where Hazel is from and being there makes Hazel much more confident than she usually is, and Daisy is shyer. ![]() Daisy usually leads everything they do and can’t stand being overlooked by grown-ups. Their detective agency is called the Wells & Wong detective society. Daisy is a really funny, impatient person whereas Hazel is more quiet and thoughtful. The books are set in the 1930s, and most are written in Hazel’s perspective. I would strongly recommend starting with the first book, because if you read them out of order then things might not make much sense and there might be some spoilers of the previous crimes. After that, suspicious deaths seem to follow them around! There are nine books in the MMU series, plus three mini mysteries as well. ![]() Murder Most Unladylike is about schoolgirl detectives, Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong, who solve a murder at their boarding school, Deepdean, which is in the English countryside. ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments Not even the bones![]() There were even playtest sessions and many players got to try what the game has to offer. ![]() Ship combat, customization, and progression systems were detailed in a series of videos and we had access to the system requirements on PC. Skull and Bones began to gain momentum last year with a full gameplay reveal last year which delved into many aspects of the game. Although this may not come as a surprise to those that have been following the game since it has a long history of delays, it's definitely disappointing for those waiting to play the game. Unfortunately, the latest financial report from the French company does not contemplate a release during the first quarter of the current fiscal period, which leaves us without Skull and Bones for a while. ![]() The latest news we had about the game pointed to a launch that would take place early in the ongoing fiscal year. Ubisoft's pirate-themed video game Skull and Bones has missed its target for a release date once more. ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments Jordy verrill creepshow![]() The segment ends with the greenery continuing to spread across his land and far beyond. After his death, a weather report is heard, stating that "Castle County is going to turn green so fast in the next month.that it's going to be almost miraculous!" Eventually, fearing what he was becoming, Jordy fetched his shotgun and put an end to his own life. Over the course of the next few days, Jordy began to grow a thick coat of vegetation over his entire body, no matter what he did to stop it - bathing only seemed to speed up its growth. ![]() However, when he touched the rock it split open, exposing him to a foul gas. The best solution would be a globally coordinated effort to tax wealth. If it continues, the future will look like the 19th century, where economic elites have predominantly inherited their wealth rather than working for it.Absent extraordinary interventions, we should expect that trend to continue. The ratio of wealth to income is rising in all developed countries. Can you give me Piketty's argument in four bullet points? But if you just want the bottom line, we have you covered. ![]() ![]() The good news is that there's no advanced math, and anyone who puts in the time can read the book. It's also 696 pages long, translated from French, filled with methodological asides and in-depth looks at unique data, packed with allusions to 19th century novels, and generally a bit of a slog. Thomas Piketty's Capital in the 21st Century is the most important economics book of the year, if not the decade. ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments Ghosts by dolly alderton![]() ![]() His new girlfriend is, of course, a figure of infinite derision. Her ex-boyfriend, who she remains friends with, is mocked as a lame boy-next-door with a dad-bod. ![]() Likewise, she bickers constantly with her mother, forever criticising rather than empathising. She openly despises her best and oldest friend for 80% of the novel. The only people she gets along with are her father and her Only Single Friend (the capitalisation is the novel’s, not mine). To begin with, seeing the story through the eyes of the narrator, Nina, was like looking through whatever the opposite of rose-tinted glasses is. But the overall message, and main takeaway, was ‘modern dating is shit’ – and despite an attempt at a happy ending, this novel left a pessimistic taste in my mouth. Yes, there were funny moments, lovable characters to root for, relatability by the bucketload. ![]() ![]() It promised ‘whip-smart observations about relationships, family, memory, and how we live now.’ What it presented – to me, a 21-year-old female reader – was a thoroughly depressing vision of the future. The above line was the most heartbreakingly depressing moment in Dolly Alderton’s first novel, Ghosts. ‘When will this all end? I just want someone nice to go to the cinema with.’ 2 STARS Dolly Alderton, 2020 CONTAINS SPOILERS ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments Triple Shot by Ross Klavan![]() And finally in Twist of Fate, Charles Salzberg follows Trish Sullivan, an ambitious TV reporter working in a small, upstate New York market.
